The Selene discovery, located in the UK Southern North Sea, was originally drilled by Hess in 1989 and deemed a failure due to poor reservoir quality and uncertainty with depth conversion. Subsequently, many different companies still identified opportunity at Selene but were unable to overcome these risks. In 2018, the Selene area was awarded to Deltic Energy in the 30th Licensing Round. Deltic was able to bring new subsurface understanding and an integrated approach to de-risk the opportunity sufficiently to attract farm-ins from Shell and Dana Petroleum, leading to a positive well decision. In 2024, the JV drilled the successful 48/8b-3Z Selene well. This presentation tells the story of how new ideas unlocked a significant discovery in a mature basin.
